JESSORE: The 191st birth anniversary of one of the major pillars of Bangla literature Michael Madhusudan Dutta will be held on January 25 (12 Magh of Bangla calendar).
The poet, who earned fame for writing sonnets and heroic epic ‘Meghnadh Badh Kabya’, was born in 1824 in a famous zamindar family on the bank of Sagardari in Jessore.
A weeklong ‘Madhu Mela’, inaugurated on January 23, is drawing thousands of people of all walks of life on the bank of the river.
Preparations have already been taken to celebrate the poet’s birth anniversary with a due manner and festive mood.
Moreover, the organizers have arranged discussions on the life and works of the poet, shows of traditional jatra pala and displays of agricultural products everyday during the fair.
Cultural programs including circus, merry-go-round, verity-show, motorcycle race have also been arranged at the fairground. Several hundreds of stalls displaying handicrafts and traditional cuisines have also been set up on the occasion of the fair.
Local administration has taken necessary steps to provide security to the visitors.
This legendary literary genius Madhusudan Dutta, who converted to Christianity, died on June 29 in 1873 in Alipur General Hospital and buried in Kolkata following the Christian rituals.
