DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) is taking preparations to hold Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections by July this year.
Moreover, the commission has sent a letter to the finance ministry for ‘additional’ allocation.
EC secretary Sirajul Islam on Sunday sent the letter to senior secretary (Finance Division) Mahbub Ahmed of the finance ministry to allocate a total of Tk 95 crore for the elections.
The letter said a writ petition was filed with the High Court (HC) when the poll schedule of the two city corporation declared on May 24, 2012 and the HC gave stay order on the elections.
On May 13 in 2014, the HC rejected the writ petition. But, the election did not hold due to the complexities regarding boundary demarcation.
The election can be held in this year if the incumbent government solves the dispute on area demarcation, the letter added.
The EC said they need a total of Tk 95 crore including additional Tk 45 crore to arrange the DSCC and DNCC elections.
However, the last DCC election was held on April 25 in 2002. The term of the then elected corporation ended in May, 2007.
