BARGUNA: A suspected robber was killed and five lawpersons sustained injuries in a clash between police and robbers at Gulishakhali village under Amtali upazila of the district early Saturday.
Following the clash, police also detained six members of the robbing gang from the spot.
The deceased was identified as Mozammel Haque, a ringleader of a robbing gang, hailed from Tikikata village of the upazila while injured policemen are Inspector Abdullah, Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam, Abdul Bari and Tarikul Islam.
The detainees are Jahirul, 35, Ansar, 30, Nasir, 25, Masum, 25, Hanif, 25 and Bacchu, 35, All are the residents of Tikikaka village under the upazila.
Amtali Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Sukumar Roy confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Sukumar said that the gang was taking preparation for robbery at an abandoned house in the village. On information, police raided there around 2:15am.
Sensing presence of the law enforces, robbers opened fire targeting the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate with bullets that triggered the gunfight, he added.
Mozammel came in the line of fire and died on the spot. Five policemen including an inspector and a sub-inspector were also injured during the incident.
Police also detained six members of the gang and recovered locally-made weapons, five cocktails and several rounds of bullets from the spot.
A case was filed against the detainees on charges of robbery attempts, assaulting police and carrying explosives.
