DHAKA: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued death warrant against convicted war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general Kamaruzzaman on Thursday a day after the Supreme Court published the full verdict upholding the death penalty.

On Wednesday Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the warrant was sent to Dhaka Central Jail authorities at 1:00pm.

Confirming the matter, Assistant jail super Nesar Alam said they have received the death warrant and next legal steps would be taken as per directives.

Besides, the copies of death warrant were also sent to Home Secretary, Law Ministry Secretary and district magistrate.

Earlier in the day, the ICT-2 chairman Justice Obaidul Hasan and two other panel members signed the death warrant around 12:30pm. Later, tribunal registrar Mostafizur Rahamn issued death warrant for Kamaruzzaman.

Later, jail authority will inform Kamaruzzaman about the death warrant.

Then, the convict can seek presidential mercy. If he does not do so, there will be no bar to execute him, he added.

He added: “The execution process will be suspended if the convict files a review petition with the apex court challenging his death penalty.”

On Thursday, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court released the full verdict upholding the death penalty for Muhammad Kamaruzzaman in a war crimes case.

Earlier on November 3 in 2014, in its verdict, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, on November 3 in 2014, upheld the verdict of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 that sentenced the Jamaat to death for his crimes against humanity in 1971.

The convict will get 15 days to appeal for a review after the publishing the full verdict.

Earlier on May 9, 2013, the ICT-2, led-by Justice Obaidul Hassan, awarded capital punishment to the Jamaat assistant secretary general for his crimes against humanity during country’s Liberation War in 1971.
