DHAKA: The High Court on Sunday asked the law enforcers to arrest the schoolteacher who allegedly raped a student of class nine in Gazipur.

An HC bench of Justice Kazi Reza-Ul-Haque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman passed the order.

Earlier in the day, Kaliakair Thana police produced four arbitrators, who are responsible for covering up the rape incident through an arbitration meeting, before the court.

According to a report published in a Bangla daily on February 17, Sujan Mahmud, a teacher of Daffodil Ideal High School at Kaliakair Upazila in Gazipur, raped a student of class nine of the school.

Local arbitrators including Anwar Hossain alias Anar Uddin, Amir Hossain, Roni and Nahid settled the matter through a ‘Shalish’ on February 15. In the negotiation, the arbitrators exempted Sujan from the charge without taking any legal actions.

After publishing the report, the HC lawyers Jaydi Hasan Khan, Nowroj MR Chowdhury, Joytirmoy Barua and Jahir Ahmed brought the matter to the attention of the High Court.

The court then took a suo-moto action and ordered police to take immediate legal actions against the guilty people, including the teacher.

Confirming the matter to banglanews, Kaliakair Thana Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruq said that the alleged arbitrators were detained but police could not detain the prime accused.

However, the HC also ordered the law enforcers to ensure security of the victim and her family.
