14 Indian fishermen held in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT: Members of Bangladesh Navy detained 14 Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler at Digraz area of the Bay of Bengal under Mongla upazila on Monday for trespassing into Bangladesh water territory.

The Navy personnel, who were in a patrol ship “Jahan BNS”, nabbed the fishermen from Digraz adjacent to Fairway Buoy area in the Bay, some 95 nautical miles from Mongla port.

All of them, hailing from different parts of South 24 Parganas district in India's West Bengal state, were handed over to Mongla Police Station on Monday night.

The naval forces also seized a fishing trawler in this connection.

Earlier, 34 Indian fishermen were held along with three trawlers from Bangladesh territory in the Bay on February 4.

On February 7, a total of 27 Indian fishermen were also held and two trawlers were seized by Bangladesh Navy for illegally intruding into the country.

Mongla Thana Sub-Inspector Manjur Elahi confirmed the matter to banglanews.
