DHAKA: United Kingdom’s Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire urged all parties of Bangladesh to take the confidence-building measures necessary to stop the last 60 days of violence and disruption in the country.
In a press statement issued by Foreign & Commonwealth Office on Thursday night, Hugo Swire said, “Britain has long been a close friend of Bangladesh. I am therefore particularly saddened about the last 60 days of violence and disruption which has had such an impact on the livelihood, education and security of so many Bangladeshi people.”
There is no place for this in a democratic Bangladesh, he added.
Hugo Swire, the minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the UK, also urged all of political parties, the Government and others in society, to take the confidence-building measures necessary to stop the violence, to reduce tension and to ensure an inclusive and participatory political process.
The death toll in the two month-long political violence has mounted to over 100 as non-stop blockade coupled with an series of hartals, have been going on in the country.
BNP-led 20-party began the anti-government protest on January 6, marking the first anniversary of the January 5 polls which was boycotted the alliance.
