Int’l Women’s Day observed

DHAKA: The International Women’s Day was observed across the country on Sunday (March 8) as elsewhere around the world to renew a vow for establishing the rights of women at every sphere of life in society.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day was “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”

The day began with lightening candles by several hundred students at Central Shaeed Minar premises in the city at 12 noon, followed by taking oath.

Noted personality Sultana Kamal administered the oath taking ceremony.

Different socio-cultural organizations of the country arranged elaborate programs to mark the day.

The Women and Children Affairs Ministry organized a program at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) to mark the day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the function as the chief guest.

Prime Minister said a vested quarter in the country wants to confine women using the religion. But many people forget that Islam has ensured the equal rights of women, the premier added.

Upholding the spirit of Islam, she asserted that the religion did not impose any barrier for the development of women. People, who are trying to create obstacles, remain their eyes closed to the proper understanding of Islam.

The premier opined that a nation can develop following the equal development of men and women in every sector.

Moreover, Sheikh Hasina, at her address, presented the employment of women in several sectors including education, judiciary, defense forces and banking in the country.

Earlier, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages and greeted women folk of the country.

The President underscored the need for ensuring women’s rights and empowerment alongside providing them with due honor, citing women’ contribution to family, society and state.

He urged all to work together to protect the rights of women, ensure their empowerment and equal opportunities.

In her message, the premier called upon all to make a promise to create an equality-based world to ensure women’s human rights, logical rights, empowerment and dignity.
