LONDON: Two British parliamentarians submitted an Early Day Motion no. 846 before its parliament seeking their government’s role in investigation into Bengali US citizen, writer and blogger Avijit Roy murder.
In the early day motion, former Labour Party minister Jim Fitzpatrick, MP sponsored by Conservative Party MP Sir Peter Bottomley MP, said, “That this House condemns the murder of Bengali US citizen, freethinker, writer and blogger Avijit Roy in Dhaka on February 26, believed to be carried out by an Islamist group which has claimed responsibility.”
They called on their Government to assist Bangladesh in any way possible to help with the crime investigation and curtailing the rise of Islamism, the motion reads.
The motion, placed at the parliament on March 6, further called on the Bangladesh government to show restraint in dealing with genuine peaceful demonstrations and protests.
The two British parliamentarians, in the motion, also expected that the Awami League and the BNP to demonstrate support for the Bangladesh secular and democratic constitution by engaging in urgent talks to restore order, especially among their supporters, and to appeal for calm in the difficult weeks ahead.
Avijit Ray was hacked to death by unknown assailants on February 26 on the Dhaka University campus and his wife, Rafida Ahmed Bonya was left seriously injured.
Earlier on March 5, a four-member team of the FBI arrived in Dhaka to help investigate the murder of Avijit Roy and visited crime scene and Crime Investigation Department (CID) office in the capital.
