Kamaruzzaman review hearing on Apr 1

DHAKA: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday adjourned till April 1 the hearing on the review petition of war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman against its verdict that upheld the death sentence to him.

The four-member bench of appellate division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, fixed the date in response to appeal of defense lawyer.

Earlier on Sunday, Chamber Judge Hasan Foyez Siddique fixed Monday for hearing the review petition of Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

On March 5, war criminal Kamaruzzaman filed a review petition with the SC against its verdict that upheld his death penalty for his crimes against humanity in 1971.

ICT-2 issued death warrant for Kamaruzzaman on February 19 after the apex court released full text of the verdict.

The tribunal sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013, for committing war crimes in 1971 Liberation War. Five out of seven charges were proved by the prosecution in the case.

Kamaruzzaman appealed against the judgment after a month.

The Apex Court handed down capital punishment to Kamaruzzaman for the massacre of Sherpur’s Sohagpur village, which has come to be widely known as “Bidhoba Palli,” or the village of widows, following a mass killing in 1971.
