DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday expressed his hope to hold the Dhaka City Corporations (North and South) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections before the holy Ramadan.

He also expected to announce the polls schedules this month.

The CEC was talking to journalists at the media center of election commission secretariat in the afternoon.

He said we have to announce the polls schedule in this month as we will have at least 37 days before the Election Day.

Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad further said SSC examination of a few subjects have been deferred, the Higher Secondary Certificate examinations will be held from April 1 to June 11 and the Ramadan will start from June 18/19.

The rainy season also will start if we make late, he added.

“The education ministry requested us to fix the polls date excluding Friday and Saturday as it has been taking SSC examinations on those days due to ongoing political situation of the country,” he added.

CEC also said, “The commission would fix the date of election excluding Friday and Saturday if the current political situation continues.”

CEC Rakibuddin also said they would seek the help of army if the situation deteriorates.

EC secretary Sirajul Islam, joint secretary Jesmin Tuli and public relations director S M Asaduzzaman were also present in the press conference.

Earlier in the morning, CEC Kazi Rakibuddin held a meeting with law enforcing agencies and education ministry officials.
