DHAKA: The sea-level is rising 1 centimeter every year due to ice meltdown for global warming. This rise will increase to 2 meters by the end of 21st century if the emission of greenhouse gases is not controlled.
Speakers of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) disclosed the matter at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in city on Saturday.
They also urged the government to relocate the people of the climate change affected areas of the country as well as to keep the affect in a tolerable level.
According to the speakers, the rise of sea-level will cause several disasters including floods in coastal areas, increasing salinity and destruction of coral reefs and other marine lives.
Water-borne diseases like Hepatitis-B, cholera and diarrhea will spread in the affected areas, they warned.
BAPA vice-president Professor Firoz Ahmed, Climate Change Mitigation Foundation president Dr Golam Rabbani and ‘Sundor Jiboner Jonno’ president Sirajul Islam Mollah, among others were present at the conference.
