MALAYSIA: Malaysian Immigration Department detained 112 foreigners, including 26 Bangladeshis, at a construction site near Jalan Chain Ferry in Penang state.
State Immigration assistant director, Abdul Rahman Hassan said in the operation, they inspected 467 foreigners who worked at the construction site of an eight-storey building, reports bernama.com Thursday.
He said among those detained were 49 Indonesians, 33 Myanmar nationals, 26 Bangladeshis and two men each from Nepal and Pakistan.
Abdul Rahman also said a majority of them did not possess any travel documents.
"Our inspections revealed that the foreigners, including five women, either failed to show any travel documents, (had) no work permits or were overstaying.
The 85 officers in the raid that included Civil Defence Department and Rela members had surrounded the multi-storey building before moving in.
"Besides that, in the operation, we also detained a two-year-old boy who did not have any documents at the construction site. The mother and father worked there," he told reporters.
He said all of them were taken to the Immigration office in Seberang Jaya to be documented before being sent to the Juru Detention Depot for further investigation.
He said some of them tried to escape and hide during the operation but failed as the officers had cordoned off the site.
He said his department was also helped by personnel from the Malaysian Civil Defence Department and Rela during the three-hour operation.
