53 held for defying fishing ban

BAGERHAT: Coast Guard personnel held some 53 fishermen in Sarankhola Upazila on Monday evening for defying a ban on catching fishes from the estuary of Baleshwari and Panguchi rivers.

Five fishing trawlers, 1,400 kilograms of fish fry and around 4,000 miters of fine-mesh gill net, known as "current jal" were also seized from their possessions.

Coast Guard West Zone Operation Officer Lieutenant Commander Golam Rabbani confirmed the matter to banglanews.

The seized trawlers and fish fry were worth about Tk 22 lakh, said the commander.

Morrelganj Upazila fisheries officer M Yakin Ali told banglanews that Coast Guard handed over the detainees to the Department of Fisheries of upazila.

Legal actions would be taken against them under the Fish Act, the officer added.
