6 killed, 6 injured in lightning

DHAKA: At least six people were killed and 6 injured in lightning in Rajbari, Gopalganj, Narayanganj, Laxmipur and Chandpur districts on Wednesday.

In Rajbari, two youth died as thunderbolt struck them in Goalanda and Baliakandi upazilas in the morning.

The victims were identified as Zakir Hossain (18), son of Khabir Sheikh of Debgram village of Goalanda upazila and Murad Sheikh (25), son of Liakat Sheikh of Natunchar village of Baliakandi upazila of the district.

According to the sources, the victims went to field for daily works.

An elderly man died in lightning in Gopinathpur village in sadar upazila in Gopalganj on the day.

He was identified as Nuru Mollah (60).

Locals said that the man was going to field with a cow. He, along with the cow, was killed as thunderbolt struck them.

Moreover, lighting killed a dredging-worker, identified as Kawsar (25), on the bank of river Buriganga at Fatulla launch-ghat in Narayanganj.

Thanpur Hospital emergency department doctor Aminul Islam said that the victim fell into the river as thunderbolt struck him and died before reaching the hospital.

In Laxmipur, a fisherman, Imam Hossain (25), was killed in lightning during fishing in the river Meghna in Ramgati upazila.

The lightning also left two fishermen critically injured.

Besides, thunderbolt killed one and injured four persons in Haimchar of Chandpur at noon.

The victim was identified as Abdur Rahman (40), son of Salamat Matabbar of Charbhanga village of Haimchar.

Locals said that the victim went to field to bring his cattle back. He was critically injured as thunderbolt struck him. Later, he was rushed to a hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival.
