8 killed in Buriganga trawler capsize

NARAYANGANJ: Eight people have died after a trawler with 80 passengers on board capsized in Buriganga River at Pagla in Sadar upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Sagor, 11, Rubel Mia, 24, Rubel Matabber, 16, son of Wahab Matabber Md Samir, 40, Kajal Mia, 28, Swapan, 22 and Karamjan Bibi, 65 of Lalbagh in Dhaka, Jakir Hossain, 30, son of Nur Uddin of Mirpur.

Of them, Samir died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 2:30pm while Rubel Matabber and Jakir died on the spot.

Later, rescuers recovered the bodies of five others from Buriganga in the afternoon.

Narayanganj deputy commissioner Anisur Rahman Mia confirmed the deaths of eight people to banglanews.

He said that anyone who wants to receive their dear one’s body without autopsy has to file application to Dhaka Deputy Commissioner as the accident took place at South Keraniganj of Dhaka and all the deceased hailed from Dhaka.

Quoting witnesses, Fatullah Model Thana Sub-Inspector Al Mamun said the Sadarghat-bound trawler, started from Beltoli of Narayanganj, collided head-on with a sand-laden trawler at Aliganj of Pagla around 1:00pm.

Most of passengers, however, managed to swim ashore but eight others went missing.
