Kamaruzzaman’s verdict at Dhaka Jail

DHAKA: The verdict of death sentence against war criminal Kamaruzzaman reached at Dhaka Central Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

A 5-member tribunal team took the verdict to jail authority for proceeding for execution.

Chief Justice (CJ) SK Sinha and three other judges have signed the copy of the Appellate Division's verdict on the review petition filed by Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

The other members include Justice Abdul Wahab Mia, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

After the signatures of all the judges therein, the copy of the verdict is being sent to International Crimes Tribunal and ICT will sent the copies to the jail authorities, home ministry and Dhaka Deputy Commissioner said sources concerned.

Attorney General office and defense lawyers will also get the full review verdict.

Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik has written the draft of the 37-page verdict was sent to the chief justice, Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.

After scrutiny, they approved the final copy of full review verdict.

The attorney general also said government will take action to execute the verdict as per section 20 (3) of International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973. Home ministry will fix the time for Kamaruzzaman’s execution.

Senior jail super Farman Ali of Dhaka central jail on Wednesday told reporters that after receiving the copy of review verdict, the jail authorities will ask Kamaruzzaman whether he will seek presidential mercy.

If he denies or President rejects his mercy petition, then the Home Ministry will fix the time for his execution and the jail authorities will execute him, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

Earlier on April 6, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected review petition of Jamaat assistant secretary general leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman against its verdict that upheld the death penalty of him.

On March 5, Muhammad Kamaruzzaman filed the review petition with the Supreme Court against its verdict that upheld his death penalty for his crimes against humanity in 1971.

On February 18, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court published the full verdict of the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general for his involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971.

Later, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued the death warrant, the day after the SC released the full text of its verdict.

Earlier on November 3 in 2014, the Appellate Division upheld the death penalty for Kamaruzzaman awarded by International Crimes Tribunal-2.

On May 9, 2013, the ICT-2, led-by Justice Obaidul Hassan, awarded capital punishment to the Jamaat assistant secretary general for his crimes against humanity during country’s Liberation War in 1971.
