DHAKA: The High Court on Wednesday gave a split verdict after bail hearing in two violence cases against BNP-backed Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor candidate Mirza Abbas.

Senior Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique gave three weeks anticipatory bail to Abbas while his junior bench member Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore rejected the bail pleas.

As per rules, the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha will now form a bench to settle the matter.

BNP leader Mirza Abbas plead for anticipatory bail release in three cases filed against him with Paltan Thana on December 28 of 2014 under charge of setting fire to a bus, with Shahbagh Thana on March 6 of 2014 for corruption in distributing government plots and with Motijheel Thana on January 4 this year under explosives act.

The bench, however, excluded the government plots distribution case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) from the cause list and asked him to go to another bench.

On April 12, Abbas’ lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, also Supreme Court Bar Council president, presented the bail pleas.

On the next day, the HC bench fixed April 15 as the date of hearing and ordered the law enforcers not to arrest or disturb Mirza Abbas in the mean time.

The court also ordered Abbas could not participate in any campaign in the mayoral run.
