HC rule on sexual harassment on Pahela Baishakh

DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday directed the inspector general of police (IG) and the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) to investigate the incident of sexual harassment against several women in the DU area on Pahela Baishakh day by one month.

An HC bench comprising Justice Qazi Reza Ul Haque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman made the sue motto order.

The bench also asked them to inform the court about the steps they took against the culprits within the time.

Taking the media reports about the incident into cognizance, the court also issued a rule upon the government asking to explain within four weeks why it would not take punitive actions against those, who were in charge of ensuring the security of the area, for neglecting their duties.

Home secretary, IG, DU vice-chancellor, Dhaka Metropolitan police commissioner, deputy commissioner of Ramna Zone police and officer-in-charge (OC) of Shabagh Thana were made respondents to the rule.

The court also fixed May 17 as the next date regarding the matter.
