DHAKA: Police said militant leaders are involved in Bangladesh Commerce Bank robbery that killed eight people in Katgara area of Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

While talking to media Friday noon, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Dhaka Range SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman said, “The incident was not simple robbery rather it was the part of sabotages as per the primary investigation.”

Two suspected robbers were detained from Kalma area of Ashulia early Friday.

The DIG further said that the arrestees, Babul Sardar, 32, and Mintu, 28, are militant leaders. The duo, earlier, was activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The law enforcers also seized latest bomb making machine, gun powder, omega wet machine, sprinter, four machetes, eight daggers, a pistol’s magazine, two motorcycles and zihadi books and leaflets.

The senior police officer, however, refused to disclose the identity of the militant group for the sake of further investigation.

Earlier on Tuesday, a daring bank robbery turned bloody as robbers shot dead seven people including the bank manager in Ashulia Industrial Area in Savar.

Later, angry mob beat to death one of the robbers while they were fleeing with about Tk 35 lakh in broad daylight.

Locals also handed another robber over to the police, while the rests managed to flee the scene.

Second officer of the Commerce Bank Faridul Hasan filed a case with Ashulia Thana.
