Elderly man hacked dead in Rangamati

RANGAMATI: An elderly man was hacked to death in Karengatali Block-B Shrabonti Buddhist Pagoda under Baghaichhari upazila of the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Gaiyanjoty Chakma, 70, a Buddhist devotee of Golachhari area of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baghaichhari Thana SM Azizul Haque confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Quoting locals, the OC said a young Buddhist devotee Rajib Chakma chopped Gaiyanjoty indiscriminately with a lethal weapon around 2:00am that left Gaiyanjoty dead on the spot.

Local sources said the alleged killer Rajib is mentally challenged.

However, the law enforcers have been trying to arrest the alleged killer, the OC added.
