DHAKA: Under tight security measures, voters will cast their ballots to elect new mayors of Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong City Corporations from 8:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday.
The Election Commission (EC) has completed its preparation for a free, fair and unbiased voting in the elections.
According to EC sources, mobile teams of police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Coast Guard, Anssar will patrol across the poll area on the election day.
Some 268 teams of RAB, 100 platoons of BGB, 268 joint team of police coast guard and Ansar, and seven platoons of Coast Guard will work for three city corporations.
Besides, some 66 teams comprised with police, APBn and Asnsar will remained deployed as striking force in the poll areas.
All sorts of vehicular movements will remain suspended in Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation areas from April 27 midnight to April 28 midnight.
According to the Election Commission (EC) circular, motor vehicles including auto-rickshaw, CNG-run auto-rickshaw, easy bike, taxicab, pickup, truck, microbus, private car and tempo, will not be allowed to run on the Election Day in Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation areas.
The Election Commission has trained 50,000 election officials, including presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers, for the election in the three cities.
A number of local and foreign observers along with a huge number of journalists will observe the election process.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC):
A total of 16 candidates are running for mayor, 281 general councilor candidates in 36 wards and 89 candidates for reserved councilor posts in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Mayor candidates for DNCC are Anisul Huq whose election symbol is ‘Table Clock’, Tabith Awal whose symbol is ‘Bus’ and Mahi B Chowdhury ‘Eagle’ and Gono Sanghati Andolan's Junaid Abdur Rahim Saki with Telescope symbol.
A total of 2,345,374 voters are expected to cast vote in 1,093 polling centers to elect their representatives for next five years.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC):
A number of 1,870,753 voters are expected to cast vote in 889 polling centers to elect their representatives in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Main mayoral contenders for DSCC are AL-supported Sayeed Khokan who will participate with the ‘Hilsha’ symbol, Mirza Abbas with ‘Mug’symbol.
A total of 20 candidates are running for mayor post while 390 general councilor candidates are vying in the 57 wards and 97 candidates for reserved councilor posts in DSCC.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC):
Besides, a total of 12 candidates are running for mayor in Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) while 213 general councilor candidates in 41 wards and 62 candidates for reserved councilor posts.
BNP supported candidate M. Manzur Alam are vying for mayor post with symbol of orange while ruling Awami League-backed AJM Nasir Uddin with elephant.
Some 1,813,449 voters are expected to cast votes in 719 polling centers in the elections.
Voting in the three city corporations will be held on Tuesday (April 28).
Government has declared holiday in the three city corporation areas.
