Why not taskforce to check rights violation: HC

DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday issued rule upon the government regarding formation of a permanent taskforce to look into the allegations against law enforcers over human rights violation.

The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi M Ijarul Haque passed order after preliminary hearing on a public interest litigation.

In the rule, the court asked why a permanent taskforce would not be formed to investigate allegations of human rights violations against law enforcers.

Concerned defendants, including Secretary of Home, Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police were asked to explain within four weeks.

Salma Ali, executive director of the National Women Lawyers' Association filed the writ petition following batons charges by police on the protesters of women's humiliation in Dhaka University during Pahela Baishakh celebration.

Although during the hearing on a petition of a lawyer, another bench of the High Court wanted to know what action has been taken against those who charged batons.
