DHAKA: A 28-year-old Bangladeshi worker has been killed in a workplace mishap at the Tun Razak Exchange Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) underground construction site in Kuala Lumpur early Sunday.

The worker, identified as Safikul, was dismantling a temporary structure used for slab work with a group of other workers when it collapsed at 1.15 am, reports bernama.com

Safikul, a worker of SP Mega Sdn Bhd, the sub-contractor engaged to carry out reinforced concrete works, was trapped beneath the debris.

He was eventually rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital but succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement from MMC Gamuda KVRT (T) Sdn Bhd, the main contractor for the Klang Valley MRT underground package.

The other workers escaped unhurt.

The statement said that SP Mega was making arrangements to inform the Bangladeshi High Commission to send Safikul's remains back home once the post-mortem was completed and the body released by the hospital.

The accident site has been closed off for further investigation, it said, adding that all relevant parties such as the Occupational Safety and Health Department had been informed.
