DHAKA: 75 percent people in Bangladesh expressed their confidence in the judicial systems and courts against that of 49 percent and 47 percent people in Europe and North America respectively.
This good news was revealed in a statistic titled “Confidence in Judiciary System Worldwide 2013: Gallup” published in third issues of ‘Just Milestone’ a newsletter of the Judicial Strengthening (JUST) project.
The JUST project is a joint initiative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Government of Bangladesh with an aim to improve access to justice, especially for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
A global survey conducted by Washington-based research company Gallup was quoted as the sources of the information in the newsletter.
According to the survey, 65 percent people in Asia have confidence in their judicial systems and courts while 49 in Europe, 48 in Sub-Saharan Africa, 47 in Middle East and North Africa each, 47 in North America, 35 in Latin America and the Caribbean and 28 in former Soviet Union.
In the survey, Bangladesh came at the second place after Bhutan where 95 percent respondents said they trust their judicial systems and courts. However, in neighboring India, 71 percent have confidence in the country’s judiciary.
The JUST project supports the Government of Bangladesh in implementing key changes to ensure rapid treatment of the cases brought to justice and creating friendlier spaces for justice seekers.
Activities of the project include training and capacity building on how to best manage the considerably high number of cases brought to the district and to the higher courts to avoid unnecessary delays which may discourage citizens to register their complaint.
It also comprises support to district courts to deliver client-oriented services and improving the overall capacity of the Bangladesh Supreme Court on strategic planning and administration.
An agreement on the project was singed among UNDP, government and Supreme Court on February 19, followed by formal launching on July 1.
