DHAKA: Police are all set to submit charge-sheets against 42 people including building owner Sohel Rana Monday morning two years after the Rana Plaza tragedy that claimed 1137 lives and injured scores.

The Criminal Investigation Department of police will submit charge-sheets in two separate cases to court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, bringing charge against some 42 people including Sohel Rana and his parents.

CID Senior Assistant Superintendent Bijoy Krishna Kar, investigation officer (IO) of the cases, told banglanews that they have successfully completed the investigation and is set to submit two charge-sheets to the court.

He also said “We have to revise some matters. So, we will submit the charge-sheets on Monday instead of Sunday.”

Charges will be brought against 41 people in a case filed under penal code. 18 people are likely to be charged in another case under the Bangladesh National Building Code.

Name of the accused also include--- 12 government officers and employees, the then-mayor of Savar municipality, and Rana’s cohorts, associates and people who assisted him to go into hiding following the tragic incident.

Some 750 people are being made witnesses in both cases.

Of accused, all but four people, inducing Sohel Rana, were granted bail and are now staying outside the jail.

On Aril 24, 2013, a nine-storied building collapsed to ground like a sandwich killing 1,137 workers and injured scores. Six out of total nine floors were housed with different units of garment factories. Some 2,438 workers were rescued alive from the rubble.

Sub-Inspector Wali Ashraf of Savar Thana and Helal Uddin, an official of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), filed two separate cases following the incident.

The Rana Plaza tragedy is the world's third deadliest disaster after Union Carbide India Limited gas leak tragedy at Bhopal in India, claiming 3,787 lives, and Benxihu Colliery explosion in China that killed 1,549 people.
