DHAKA: Any country alone is incapable to control human traffickers who are not limited by borders as their network extends from one country to another.

This is why inter-country police assistance including the facilities of information collection and sharing is necessary.

Delegations from 35 countries reached in a consensus in this regard in an international conference on enhancing enter-country assistance on human trafficking and migrant smuggling in a city hotel Tuesday.

Bangladesh Police, Australian Federal Police and UNDP Police Reform Program (PRP) jointly organized the two-day conference.

High-ups of PRP and 35 police officials with experiences on human trafficking and migrant smuggling joined the conference from Bangladesh, Australia, India, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Speakers expected that this conference will strengthen relations among the police departments of the participating countries.

With national project director of Police Reform Program Mokhlesur Rahman, also additional IG of Bangladesh Police, in the chair, Dr Gowher Rizvi, international affairs adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, attended as chief guest.

Home secretary Dr Mozammel Haque Khan, acting IGP Mohammad Javed Patwari, UNDP country director Pauline Tamesis and Australian Federal Police delegate Christopher Woods also addressed the conference.

Dr Rizvi put emphasis on setting up coordinated legal infrastructure and specialized investigation efficiency for inter-country police to deal with trans-border crimes.

Mozammel Haque Khan highlighted various steps taken by Bangladesh government to boost concerted efforts to prevent human trafficking.

Additional IGP Mokhlesur Rahman mentioned about founding Women Support Investigation Division (WSID).

He also mentioned about setting up separate unit at CID to deal with human trafficking and PRP’s assistance in founding eight victim centers in several districts of the country.

Additional IGP also put importance on setting up a trans-boundary police network and sharing information to abate terror activities.

Pauline Tamesis highlighted UNDP’s regional activities to protect victims of human rights violation.
