Take action against Gulshan Lake encroachers in 7-day

DHAKA: The High Court (HC) asked the government on Monday to take action within seven days against those involved in filling up Gulshan Lake from Shahjadpur to Baridhara.

A bench of Justice Jinat Ara and Justice JN Dev Chowdhury on Monday passed the order in response to a public interest litigation.

The court also directed RAJUK and DMP to submit report within three weeks on execution of its order.

Besides, the court issued a rule to the government to explain in three weeks why directives should not be given to the government to stop giving permission to anyone to construct any establishment by filling-up the lake.

Eight people concerned, including environment secretary, RAJUK chairman and DMP commissioner were made respondent of the rule and asked to explain within four weeks.

Advocate Monjil Morshed moved for the petition.

Earlier on Sunday, the writ petition was filed with attachment of report published in a national daily regarding the matter.

The reports said new establishments are being built by filing up Gulshan Lake from Shahjadpur to Baridhara. For these, the width of Gulshan Lake has been reducing day by day.
