DHAKA: Thoroughfares, several lanes and by-lanes in city went under rain water, caused by the monsoon shower due to the low in the Bay of Bengal.
The rain also caused terrific traffic congestion than usual as submerged roads slowed down vehicular movement. This has been causing extremely taxing condition for the city dwellers.
Many people could not go out of their houses Saturday morning due to torrential rains since Friday night.
Meanwhile, many businesspeople could not open their shops and employees reached their workplaces late.
Several spots of roads in city turned stinky as garbage and other waste products from open dustbins mixed with the rainwater.
Met office sources said it might rain till Sunday.
Malibagh, Rajarbagh and parts of Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Jatrabari, Shahjahanpur, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Rampura, Hajipara, Khilgaon, Nakhalpara, Jatrabari, Jurain, Demra, Badda and parts of old Dhaka including Tikatuli and Hatkhola went under water.
This submerged condition caused heavier traffic jam in those areas.
One Matiur Rahman, resident of Malibagh area, told banglanews that though the rain dissipated a little, water could not go out quickly due to bad drainage system.
Moreover, thousands in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar districts also become victims of water-logging due to heavy rainfall in the areas.
However, the weather forecast said, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions with heavy to very heavy falls at places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Rajshahi divisions till 9:00am Sunday.
