MDGs: Bangladesh makes progress

LONDON: Bangladesh has made progress in achieving Millennium Development Goals. Renowned journalist Mishal Husain has focused such information in her series report in BBC World from Dhaka during a spot visit.

In her report, Mishal Husain said, "We’ve come to Bangladesh because it is one of the biggest recipients of British overseas aid- £190million in this financial year alone.”

Lauding Bangladesh’s recent development, Mishal Husain said, Bangladesh is on track to reach several of the Millennium Development Goals set by United Nations.

Fifteen years ago, the United Nations marked the new millennium with a series of pledges aimed at improving the lives of the world's poorest people.

The Millennium Development Goals were ambitious, with eight different targets, covering issues including poverty reduction and improvements in healthcare and education.

The goals were to be met by 2015, and while progress has been mixed, Bangladesh is one country that has made big gains.

As part of a BBC News series on Millennium goals, Mishal Husain looks at the changes in the Kuril slum in the capital Dhaka.

Showing several scenes in the slums of Dhaka’s Kuril, in the report, Bangladesh's achievements- gender equality in primary and secondary education, to bring down the poverty rate, child and maternal mortality reduction and women empowerment- are appreciated.

In 2000, all 189 United Nations member states at the time committed to help achieve the following Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world's time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions which include looking at income, poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion. Whilst doing so,  promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability is also an objective.

In September 2010, the international community committed again to redouble efforts to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

In recent, the world community, including the United Nations, widely lauded Bangladesh for achieving the targets of the MDGs in various fields including Women empowerment, poverty alleviation, reduction of child and maternal mortality, achieving gender equality in education and reducing the dropouts of children from primary schools.

Bangladesh is now widely considered as a role model for countries looking to achieve the MDG targets.
