DHAKA: Trinamul Nari Uddyakta Society (GRASSROOTS) has been selected as the recipient of "FOBANA Outstanding Community Service Award of 2015" for their brilliant effort to empower women through home based workers program.
According to a press release issued by FOBANA, the award will be presented to Grassroots officials in New York on September 6.
State Minister Meher Afroz Chumki, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, has already been invited to attend the program and told her that an agency register under her ministry has been selected as this year’s award recipient.
Every year FOBANA selects one organization for their outstanding contribution to society and this year is no exception.
On behalf of the FOBANA Award Committee the current Chairperson of the Committee Atiquer Rahman (Florida) has proposed to FOBANA Executive Committee to accept their nomination for this year’s award.
The press release said the organisation has been actively working for economic freedom of home based worker and self employed workers of Bangladesh (Close to 30 million of which 80% are Women).
GRASSROOTS help these destitute women by training them on how to produce marketable goods and then give them opportunities to attend various exhibition and fairs to showcase their products, it added.
They had helped these women attend many fairs in Bangladesh, China and India. This year they are planning to send 10 of their best members to FOBANA 2015 Convention to be held in New York in September.
They have already started to produce and exported Coconut Coir product from Barisal, Tulsi Leaf Tea From Gaibandha, Laxmipur district, Thaiclay product, Sylhet District Monipuri Handicrafts, and Rupganj’s Jamdani Products.
Himanshu Mitra, CEO of Grassroots will come from Bangladesh to receive the award. He will be accompanied by Shahin Akhter Sathi, Central Committee Vice President, Touhida Haider, Central Committee Treasurer, Selina Haider Dhaka, District President, Rabeya Akter Riea, Sylhet District Committee Member and Salma Akhter, Central Committee Member.
