DHAKA: Bangladesh is closely observing the proposed ‘Indian Rivers Inter-link Project’, said foreign secretary Shahidul Haque on Sunday.
It is a proposed large-scale civil engineering project that aims to link India's rivers through a network of reservoirs and canals to face persistent floods in some of its parts and water shortages in other parts of India.
‘India can do whatever they want but they will not anything that hampers Bangladesh interest,’ the secretary hoped.
Citing the joint statement during India premier Narendra Modi’s Bangladesh visit in May, the secretary said that India will not do anything that affect Bangladesh especially in the issues of common rivers.
However, the most of the rivers including the Ganga and Teesta are flowing through India and Bangladesh.
According to experts, Bangladesh will be the most affected country if India rivers inter-link project is implemented.
