DHAKA: The election commission (EC) will distribute smart national identity (NID) cards in place of existing laminated cards among the voters of Dhaka city first.

Election commissioner Shahnewaz was talking to journalists at his secretariat office in city on Monday.

He also expected that the production of smart national identity cards will begin by the end of this month or in September.

“Voters of Dhaka city and its adjoining areas will get the smart NID cards first,” he added.

He further said, “Later, the cards will be distributed at district and thana levels”.

The commissioner, however, said no decision was taken regarding the date of the card distribution.

Newly added 47-lakh voters in 2014 will get the smart NID cards in place of laminated cards, he added.

In response to a question Shahnewaz said, “People of newly added 111 enclaves will also get their NIDs”.

“But it will take some time as the authorities concerned will inform the EC after finalizing boundaries of the areas.”

“The EC will then count voters of the area.”

Later, they will get their cards, he added.
