DHAKA: The United Nations in Bangladesh condemned the killing of blogger Niloy Chakraborty Neel and called upon the authorities bring the perpetrators to justice.
In a press statement issued on Friday night, UN Resident Coordinator Robert D. Watkins described the fatal attack as “a heinous crime against yet another on-line activist and an attack on tolerance”.
He also called upon the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice in a speedy manner, including in all the previous cases.
“The Police need to take concrete measures to protect citizens. Moreover, strong condemnation of these incidents from the all levels of society will be important to prevent further murders”, Robert D. Watkins added.
The UN in its earlier statement already drew attention to the seemingly increasing intolerance towards people peacefully expressing their views on-line.
Besides, the United Nations Special Rapporteurs on freedom of expression, David Kaye, and on extrajudicial executions, Christof Heyns, have condemned killing in blogger Niloy Neel, a supporter of free expression and opponent of fundamentalism of all kinds.
Niloy is the fourth Bangladeshi blogger hacked to death so far this year.
Earlier on Friday, another Blogger and online activist named Niloy Neel, 40, was slaughtered by unidentified miscreants in his house at Khilgaon in the capital.
