Over 200 Bangladeshi stranded at Greek island

DHAKA: More than 200 Bangladeshis migrants, who came to Greece from Turkey with the help of traffickers, have been stranded at Kush Island of Greece for over three weeks.

Several migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and some other countries tried to enter Greece capital Athens. Failing to enter Athens, currently, they have been living sub-human life at Kush Island.

Two of the stranded, Rafiqul Islam Noyon of Narsingdi and Raqib Khan from Debidwar of Comilla told banglanews how they went there and passing their days.

They told banglanews, “With the help of traffickers, we came to Bodrum from Istanbul. The traffickers, then, deported us on a motorboat and gave an oar. We reached here (Kus) with difficulty.”

They also said local police used to give stay-paper for a month. But, they were not issuing them any and this is why they could not return even if they wanted.

“Each of us had €100-150 that we spend,” they added.

Noyon’s relative Firoz Mia contacted the Bangladesh embassy in Greece. But a female official said it was not their duty to bring back illegal migrants and advised to join Bangalis in Greece.

Current correspondent tried for several times to contact the embassy but failed as it was closed due to weekly holiday.
