JESSORE: Assailants slaughtered a local Awami League leader in Panchpukur Kadamtala area of Sharsha upazila early Friday amid an alarming turn in the incidence of crime in the area.

The victim, Mujibur Rahman Maju, 25, was a local leader of the ruling party.

Quoting family members police said Maju came under attack at about 00:30am while returning home from Navaron Bazar after attending his younger brother’s marriage ceremony.  

“The assailants waylaid and slaughtered him,” says an eyewitness account of the killing.

Acting on information, police rushed in and recovered the body, said Sharsha thana acting officer-in–charge Enamul Haque.  

“Motives behind Maju’s murder could not be known yet,” police said.
