Why Bangladeshis for hazardous work? N Gopal Kishnam

DHAKA: Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said their government should invest in Malaysians, instead of spending money to bring in and train 1.5 million Bangladeshi workers.

Why the Bangladeshis would only be employed for 3D (dangerous, difficult and dirty sector) jobs, it added.

MTUC secretary-general N Gopal Kishnam in a statement on Wednesday said, "It is better to give locals trainings and good wages to make them interested into the 3D jobs."

He also said though locals are not interested into 3D jobs now, better wages could change their minds.

He referred to Singapore as an example where the local are engaged in 3-D works.

Last year Singapore had fixed the salary of the cleaners at SD 1,000 which is MR 2,800 and in Bangladesh currency Taka 56,000.

If a comparison is made this kind of job is done by MR 900 (Taka 17,500) in Malaysia and in East Malaysia it is by MR 800 (Taka 15,000).

In the statement MTUC demands that along with good salary let the matter of illegal migrants be settled first then before importing new workers.

Gopal also mentioned that his country should not depend on foreign workers. According to him, it is harmful for the economy of the country and a negative impact creates among people.

When Abdul Hakim Hamidi, brother of Malaysia deputy prime minister and home minister Ahmed Zahid Hamidi have set up a monopolistic online monitoring system to bring 1.5 millions Bangladeshi workers, then Gopal has expressed his concern to counter it.
