Suvra cremated: Modi, Hasina, Sonia attend funeral

DHAKA: Suvra Mukherjee, wife of India President Pranab Mukherjee, has been cremated at Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The funeral ceremony was attended by Pranab Mukherjee, their children Sharmistha, Abhijit and Indrajit, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.



Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee, among others, were also present.

Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed floral wreaths at the coffin of Suvra Mukherje.

She went to 13, Talkatora Road, the residence of Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee to lay a wreath on the body.

On arrival at New Delhi on Wednesday, the premier met to President Pranab Mukherjee and expressed her condolence for the demise of his wife.

India's First Lady passed away at 10:51am on Tuesday after a cardiac arrest at the Army's Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi.



The body of Suvra Mukherjee was kept at Rashtrapati Bhavan from 3:00pm to 5:00pm Tuesday for the family and friends to pay their last respects.

Thereafter, the body was shifted to her son's residence on Talkatora Road in Delhi.
