No need for hearing, I’ll quit Abdul Latif Siddique

DHAKA: Former minister Abdul Latif Siddique appeared in hearing of the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday and declared to resign as a Member of Parliament (MP).

He said: “I’ll resign as MP. There is no need for hearing or debate on it.”

He made the announcement in the hearing over his parliamentary membership at EC secretariat in city.

On July 13, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury issued a letter, adding the letter by AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam to take action, to CEC asking him to take decision about the MP post of Latif Siddique.

Siddique moved the High Court challenging the EC’s move, but his petition was rejected on Thursday by the bench of Justice Md Emdadul Huq and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar.

Besides, he was asked to face EC hearing over the matter on August 23 (Sunday).

Earlier on Sunday morning, a four-member Supreme Court Appellate Division bench, in response of his appeal, issued no order and upheld High Court’s decision.

Latif Siddique was sacked from the Cabinet last year for his controversial comment on Hajj and subsequently expelled from the Awami League.
