Chandpur: Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni Friday reaffirmed that Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant would be set up during the tenure of the present government for mitigating country’s nagging power crisis.

“A treaty has been signed with Russia to this effect, and with the establishment of the plant, power crisis will be reduced to a great extent,” she said at a programme held here for distributing freedom fighters’ and maternity allowances.

Blaming the previous governments for plundering crores of taka, Dipu Moni said, “The governments didn’t do anything for the development of the power sector.”

Had the caretaker and BNP-Jamaat alliance governments worked for the development of the sector, the present government would not have to face the problem, she observed.

“Not a single megawatt of power had been generated in the country in the seven years (under the two regimes),” the FM told her compatriots.

Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Priyotosh Saha, District AL president Dr. Md Shamsul Haq Bhuiyan and General Secretary Abu Nayeem Patwary Dulal, Poura Mayor Nasir Uddin Ahmed and Sadar upazila council vice-chairman Nurul Islam Nazim Dewan were among other present at the meeting.

Later, the Foreign Minister unveiled the foundation stones of a number of development programmes.
