DHAKA: Bangabir Abdul Quader Siddique on Friday filed an appeal to the Election Commission (EC) against the decision of canceling his candidacy in the by-election of Tangail-4 (Kalihati) constituency on allegation of default of loan.
On behalf of Abdul Quader Siddique, Krishak Sramik Janata League joint general secretary Iqbal Siddique filed the appeal plea.
A show-cause notice, issued by Bangladesh Bank (BB), was also added with the appeal plea. Agrani Bank managing director was made the respondent in the notice.
The notice asked why the name of Abdul Quader Siddique was included on loan defaulters’ list.
On October 13, Returning Officer M Alimuzzaman cancelled the nomination papers of four candidates including Abdul Quader Siddique and his wife Nasrin Quader Siddique.
Alimuzzaman said their nomination papers were cancelled as Credit Information Bureau (CIB) of the central bank informed that they (Quader and Nasrin) have a loan worth Tk10.88-crore in Agrani Bank Ltd in the name of their organisation Shonar Bangla Engineering.
Ruling Awami League (AL) nominee Imam Khan Sohel Hajari and other two Krishak Sramik League leaders, Iqbal Hossain Siddique and Hasmat Ali, JP’s Sadeq Siddique, Ataur Rahman Khan from BNF and Imrul Kayes of NPP were marked eligible for the by-election.
The Tangail-4 constituency has been vacant since its previous MP, Latif Siddique was expelled from the cabinet and the parliament for making offensive comments on Hajj.
