CHITTAGONG: Leading sugar manufacturer and importer S Alam Sugar Mill Company Thursday began supplying sugar at Tk 42 per kilogram, supplementing government effort to keep the market stable.

On the first day, the S Alam Group in the afternoon handed over 200-ton sugar at Tk 42 per kilo formally to Khatunganj Trade & Industries Association at Laldighi Maidan.

The company announced supply of 200 tons of sugar per day till the day before Eid-ul-Fitr.

Khatunganj Trade & Industris Association leaders said a total of 17 traders of Khatunganj and Chaktai will sell out sugar at Tk 44 per kilo on the wholesale market before Eid-ul-Fitr.

The sale of sugar will be monitored by the district administration.

S Alam Group Director (Technology) Engineer Shahidul Alam told journalists that “as part of social responsibility we are supplying sugar at a price lower than the government-fixed rate considering general consumers’ interest.”

He hoped that following the auctioning of sugar, the price hike of sugar will be controlled.

The government earlier had fixed the price of sugar at Tk 43 per kilo at mill gate and wholesale rate highest Tk 45 per kilo.

Engineer Shahidul Alam for S Alam Group, Magistrate Fiznur Rahman and Md. Shamsuzzaman for District Administration and Association president Mahbubul Alam, Vice-president Abdus Salam, General Secretary Sayed Chhagir Ahmed were present on the occasion of the bulk sale of sugar.

Magistrate Fiznur Rahman said the district administration will be monitoring until Eid-ul-Fitr the selling of sugar at Tk 42 per kilo at mill gate and at wholesale rate of maximum Tk 44 per kilo as per declaration of businessmen.
