DHAKA: Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed claimed the government is progressing in its move to bring back the condemned fugitives from the Bangabandhu murder case to execute the court verdict.  

“The court verdict will be executed within the tenure of the present government,” he told journalists at the secretariat after the 4th meeting of the taskforce formed to supervise the process of extraditing the fugitives.  

He said following diplomatic negotiations the government has finalised legal procedure to bring back one of the fugitives, Noor Chowdhury, from Canada.

“He will be brought back anytime,” said Barrister Shafique about the progress made in the government effort to execute the court verdict on the rest of the former army officers for the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the August 15, 1975 coup.

Replying to a question about the whereabouts of other fugitives he said, “We have a lot of progress in this regard, which should not be made public right now.”

Ruling out any kind of pressure from outside the country he said, “We are getting support from foreign countries and we will sign extradition treaty, if necessary, to bring them back.”  

Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, State Minister for Law Advocate Quamrul Islam, Law Secretary Anwarul Haque, Home Secretary Abdus Sobahan Sikder and Foreign Secretary Mijarul Quayes, among others, attended the meeting.
