Road mishap kills buying-house official in city: backlash disrupts traffic

DHAKA: A buying-house official was killed as a recklessly driven bus ran down him in front of Ayurbedic Hospital at Mirpur in the city on Sunday morning, triggering a violent protest.

The deceased was identified as Qumrul Ahsan Swapon, 38, hailed from Lakhsham in Comilla.

Sub-Inspector of Kafrul thana Hasan told banglanews that a speeding bus of Bahan Paribahan ran over Swapon while crossing the road in front of the hospital at Mirpur-13.

“He died instantly, being crushed under wheels of the bus,” says an eyewitness account of the accident that occurred while he was going to his workplace.

Outraged by the accident, a mob vandalized a few vehicles as traffic halted for an hour amid the backlash. As a result, office-bound people suffered a lot. Later, police brought the situation under control.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Police seized the killer bus though the driver and the helper managed to flee the scene after the accident, one in a series across the country in recent times. A case was filed with Kafrul thana.
