DHAKA: The Hindu community celebrated Shuva Janmashtami on Wednesday to mark the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna.
According to the Hindu religion, Lord Vishnu incarnated in the universe as Lord Krishna in the prison of Raja Kangsa on this day, the eighth day of ‘Shukla Pakkha’ (bright fortnight) in the month of Bengali calendar year Bhadra in Dwapara Yuga in order to protect ‘Dharma’ from the hands of devils.
On the occasion, colorful Janmashtami processions displaying the events of the life of Krishna was organized in the capital, divisional cities and districts.
Other programmes of the day include puja, prayer, discussion, cultural function, distribution of ‘prasad’ and feeding the poor.
Meanwhile, the law enforcing agencies took foolproof security measures throughout the country to ensure safety and security of the Janmashtami processions.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the opposition in parliament Khaleda Zia greeted the members of the Hindu community on the occasion and wished their happiness and well-being in separate messages.
President M Abdul Hamid hosted a reception for distinguished members of the Hindu community at Bangabhaban at 5:00pm on August 28 marking the Janmashtami.
The day was public holiday.
National dailies published special articles on the ideals of Lord Krishna while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private Television channels aired special programmes highlighting significance of the day.
