‘Propaganda to tarnish cop image’

DHAKA: Acting Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haq alleged that a vested quarter had been trying to tarnish image of police spreading propaganda over May 5 Shapla Chattar crackdown.

He came up with the allegation in a press briefing at Police Headquarters in the capital on Thursday morning.

AKM Shahidul Haq said, “The number of dead (61), given by human rights organization Odhikar was motivated as no evidence was found. 13 people dies in separate incidents on May 5 and 6.”

On Midnight of May 5, thousands of activists of Hefajat-e-Islam fled Motijheel and Shapla Chattar areas following combined drive of Rapid Action Battalion, police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel.

Earlier, they took position at the venue from early hours of the day during their Dhaka siege programme to press home their 13-point demand including trial of atheist bloggers.
