Jewelers’ strike underway in Sylhet

SYLHET: Shutting down all the jewellery shops, owners are observing the day-long strike on Thursday demanding the recovery of robbed jewelries and punishments of robbers.

After holding a road blockade programme on the same demand, Sylhet Jewellers’ Samity on Wednesday night called the shutdown for Thursday.

Jewellery shop owners said the strike will continue whole day to realize their demands.

The agitated jewellers also threatened to enforce a tougher agitation programme if the robbers were not arrested within 24 hours and the gold was not recovered.”

Following the incident, Jewelers blamed power department officials and police as the law enforcers took much time to reach the spot and power outage occurred on that time.

Sylhet Jewellers’ Samity general secretary Babul Ahmed said that such type of robbery incident is rare in evening.

Earlier on Wednesday night, a security guard was killed when robbers exploded crude bombs and looted three jewellery shops at Nehar Market in Jindabazar area of the city.
