Suhrawardy’s birth anniversary being marked

DHAKA: The 121st birth anniversary of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, renowned Bengali politician, lawyer, is being celebrated on Sunday through arranging programmes.

Marking the day various organizations chalked out different programs includes— discussion, placing floral wrath at his grave and arranging award giving ceremony.

Bangabandhu cultural organization alliance, Shaheed Suhrawardy Jatiya Smrity Parisad and Biswa Bangalee Sommelan placed floral wrath at the grave of Suhrawardy.

Later, Shaheed Suhrawardy Jatiya Smritee Parisad and Biswa Bangalee Sommelan jointly arranged discussion at the premises of tomb.

Supreme Court appellate division judge Mamtaj Uddin Ahmed as the chief guest said that Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy not only wished for a democratic country but also dedicated to the welfare of human life. Though he was a prime minister, he passed his latter part of life in extremely poor conditions.”

Awami league advisory committee member Yusuf Hossain, Shaheed Suhrawardy Jatiya Smrity Parisad president Abdul Khaleq, language hero Shamsul Huda and others were present in the discussion program.

Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was born in Medinipur, west Bengal on September 8 in 1892.

Suhrawardy completed his undergraduate studies at St. Xavier’s College, and completed a master’s degree at the University of Calcutta. Afterwards, he moved to the United Kingdom to attend St Catherine’s College, Oxford University from where he obtained a BCL degree.

In 1920, Suhrawardy married Begum Niaz Fatima, daughter of Sir Abdur Rahim, then home minister of the Bengal Province of British India and later President of India’s Central Legislative Assembly.

Suhrawardy returned to the subcontinent in 1921 as a practicing barrister of the Calcutta High Court. Then he involved in politics in Bengal.

Initially, he joined the Swaraj Party, a group within the Indian National Congress, and became an ardent follower of Chittaranjan Das.  

Suhrawardy became Deputy Mayor of the Calcutta Corporation in 1924.

In 1946, Suhrawardy established and headed a Muslim League government in Bengal.

In 1956, he was made Prime Minister of Pakistan after the resignation of Chowdhury Muhammad Ali.

His contribution in formulating the 1956 constitution of Pakistan was substantial as he played a vital role in incorporating provisions for civil liberties and universal adult franchise in line with his adherence to parliamentary form of liberal democracy.

He was arrested showing allegation of doing anti-state activities under Pakistan Security Act on January 30 in 1962.

Disqualified from politics under the military regime of Ayub Khan, Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy died in Lebanon in 1963.
