DHAKA: Tensions built up at Dhaka University as police prevented the ousted opposition Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal student politicos from making their comeback on the campus Tuesday, a day after they were beaten out by their rivals.

Members of the student arms of both the ruling Awami League and the main opposition BNP took face-to-face position the areas adjacent to the University, witnesses said.

Expressing his concern, Chhatra Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku said, “We will go for tougher programmes, including indefinite strike on the campus, if our demand are not met by June 30.”

Chhatra Dal threw a three-day agitation programme demanding resignation of the DU Vice-chancellor and the proctor against the backdrop of Monday’s attack.

At least 30 activists of Chhatra Dal were injured when Chhatra League activists attacked them in front of Madhu’s canteen on Monday.

Chhatra League joint secretary Mamunur Rashid, Suryasen Hall president Shhid Majumder, Zia Hall president Iffat Hossain Riku, DU Chhtra League vice-resident Mostak Ahmed and joint-secretary Siddiqui Nazmul led the attack, alleged Chhatra Dal men.

Later on Tuesday, Chhatra Dal members led by Tuku and the unit’s general secretary, Amirul Islam Alim, held a rally in front of the central public library at Shahbag after hitting police restrictions while entering the campus.

Chhatra League central president Mahmud Hasan Ripon claimed the Chhatra Dal tried to make the educational institutions unstable across the country. “We will prevent all the planned conspiracies at any cost,” he said.

Chhatra League members also held rally at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla after bringing out a procession.

Acting officer-in-charge of Shahbag Thana Rezaul Islam told banglanews24.com.bd that the situation on the campus became normal after the JCD departed finishing the rally at Shahbag.
