DHAKA: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Thursday suggested Dhaka City Corporation to redesign its waste-management system to solve the problem with garbage that often litters streets in the capital.

Saeda Makimoto, Senior Representative of JICA, at a seminar here said loads of solid wastes would be reduced to a great extent if the 3R system (Reduce- Reuse- Recycle) is introduced properly in the city.

She also said residents of any wards could introduce the waste-management system by forming small groups.

The Japanese cooperation agency and the DCC jointly organized the seminar titled "Awareness building on global warming".

Bipan Kumar Saha, Chief Waste Management Officer of the DCC, laid importance on recruitment of more manpower than reform for the development of the waste management.

“Lack of knowledge in using modern technologies and lack of awareness among the people is also a big problem. Private sector must come forward to resolve the problem," he said

A number of environment experts and officials of DCC, including a number of ward councilors, were also present at the seminar.
